NY Work-Zone Crashes Injured Dozens of People Last Year. What Is the State Doing About It?

Following 366 work-zone crashes on NYSDOT-maintained roads in 2025, New York has been expanding work-zone safety measures to protect highway workers.

In 2025 alone, 366 work-zone crashes on NYSDOT-maintained roads resulted in 58 injuries and two fatalities. As such, the state is continuing its work-zone safety push through stronger enforcement and harsher penalties for repeat offenders.

Earlier this year, Gov. Hochul highlighted 322 work-zone intrusions and 138 injuries that took place in 2024. Through initiatives such as Operation Hardhat, automated speed enforcement, and driver safety reminders, the state aims to discourage drivers from speeding through active work zones.

Drivers are also required to follow New York State’s Move Over Law, which means they should change lanes if possible when approaching stopped construction vehicles, emergency vehicles, tow trucks, and disabled vehicles on the side of the road.
