Increasing battery energy density, fast-charging requirements, higher power output, and stringent battery safety requirements are driving the value and technology intensity of BTMS. OEMs are transitioning from conventional air-cooling toward liquid-cooled and integrated thermal architectures capable of managing battery temperature with greater precision and efficiency. Technology is also shifting toward AI-based thermal simulation, cell-level temperature monitoring, direct cell cooling, and intelligent controls, particularly for high-voltage 800 V EV platforms requiring faster charging and tighter thermal uniformity. 800V BTMS solutions are being developed with higher coolant flow, faster preconditioning, and integrated battery heating and cooling to manage higher charging loads.
- In June 2026, MAHLE started series production of battery cooling plates at its Montblanc plant in Spain to support growing demand for liquid cooled battery systems. The company plans to increase production from around 1,000 units per week to 8,000 units per week by the end of 2026, with the facility capable of reaching up to 15,000 units per week. The cooling plates use optimized coolant channels to distribute heat uniformly across the battery and maintain operating temperatures below 40°C. MAHLE is also expanding the production area by around 10,000 m², supporting higher volume production of battery thermal management components.
- In December 2025, Webasto developed its Heated Chiller to combine battery cooling, battery heating, and cabin heating within a single thermal management unit. The system integrates the chiller, battery heater, and interior heater, reducing component count and simplifying thermal system integration. The architecture supports coordinated temperature control across the battery and cabin, enabling battery preconditioning for charging while also meeting cabin heating requirements. Webasto is positioning the Heated Chiller as a compact thermal management solution for electric vehicles, with the technology currently progressing toward production applications.
The BEV segment is expected to have the largest share in the global BTMS market.
BEVs are expected to be the fastest-growing vehicle type in the battery thermal management system market, as they account for more than 50% globally, supported by higher battery energy density, tighter cell temperature-control requirements, and greater integration of battery and vehicle thermal systems. Within passenger BEVs, NMC batteries require active thermal control as higher energy density and charging power increase heat generation and cell temperature variation, which supports liquid cooling, direct cell cooling, battery preconditioning, and active temperature control. OEMs and BTMS suppliers are focusing on integrated and actively controlled thermal architectures. For instance, the Mercedes AMG GT 4 Door Coupe uses direct cooling of cylindrical NCMA battery cells, with intelligent thermal management controlling cell temperature during high power operation, while Bosch provides intelligent battery temperature control and diagnostics for BEVs. These developments are increasing the need for optimized coolant distribution, low-thermal-resistance cooling structures, and coordinated thermal control across the battery, heat pump, HVAC, electric motor, and power electronics. High energy density batteries and higher charging power are therefore supporting demand for advanced active BTMS solutions, particularly for NMC-based passenger BEVs.

The cooling plates segment is projected to hold the highest value share in the global BTMS market.
The battery cooling plates segment is estimated to hold the highest value share in the battery thermal management system market, supported by their growing use in high-capacity battery packs where consistent temperature control is required across multiple modules. Commercial EVs require advanced cooling plates because their larger battery packs and sustained high-power operation generate higher thermal loads during vehicle operation and charging. OEMs are integrating cooling-plate-based liquid cooling into commercial EV battery architectures to support higher battery capacity and operating power. For instance, Scania uses liquid cooling with cooling channels or cooling plates integrated into or around battery modules in its electric trucks. Additionally, in January 2026, Volvo Group along with SAE stated that it was working on optimizing battery cooling plate design to improve heat transfer and coolant flow in electric vehicle battery thermal systems. The move toward higher capacity packs is also increasing the need for optimized coolant flow paths and larger effective cooling surfaces, while compact pack architectures are pushing suppliers to develop thinner plates with improved thermal contact. The increasing deployment of high-capacity batteries in commercial EVs is therefore driving the adoption of advanced cooling plate architectures and supporting their leading position in the BTMS component market.
Europe is set to experience significant growth in the global battery thermal management system market.
Europe is expected to account for a significant share of the battery thermal management system market, supported by the adoption of advanced thermal architectures across electrified vehicle platforms. In Europe, BEVs account for more than a 60% share in 2025, creating demand for BTMS. The growing use of BEVs and PHEVs in Europe is increasing demand for hybrid BTMS technology, as these systems combine liquid cooling, refrigerant cooling, and heating functions to manage different battery operating conditions. OEMs and BTMS suppliers are focusing on these requirements through integrated hybrid thermal architectures. For instance, MAHLE combines low-temperature and refrigerant circuits for battery and power electronics cooling, allowing different thermal loads to be managed within the same system. The growing use of high power charging is also increasing the need for coordinated battery preconditioning and cooling in Europe. The shift toward high-voltage, high-power EV platforms is therefore supporting adoption of the BTMS market in Europe.

Battery Thermal Management System Market – Investment and Funding Scenario
Investment Funding Context
Investment and funding activity in the battery thermal management system (BTMS) market was the highest in 2024, reaching approximately USD 18.96 billion, compared with USD 0.87 billion in 2023, USD 0.02 billion in 2025, and USD 0.007 billion through September 2026. The sharp increase in 2024 reflects significant capital deployment toward battery thermal management technologies and electrification-related thermal systems. Funding activity declined substantially after 2024, with only one recorded deal each in 2025 and 2026, indicating lower disclosed investment activity in the battery thermal management system ecosystem.
Revenue Shift Context
Battery thermal management system revenue is shifting from conventional cooling components such as cold plates, pumps, heat exchangers, chillers, heaters, and temperature sensors toward integrated thermal architectures for high-voltage, high-power, and fast-charging EV platforms. Future revenue opportunities are expanding across immersion cooling, advanced battery chillers, heat pump-based battery thermal management, thermoelectric cooling, predictive thermal control, and integrated battery and powertrain thermal systems. This shift allows BTMS suppliers to capture higher value through integrated cooling, sensing, and control functions rather than standalone thermal hardware. As EV platforms move toward higher-energy-density batteries, 800 V architectures, and faster charging, revenue is increasingly linked to technologies that improve cell-level temperature uniformity, charging performance, and thermal control.
Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A)
Mergers & acquisitions in the BTMS market are driven by automotive thermal management suppliers, Tier 1 suppliers, and automotive component groups seeking to expand their alternative fuel infrastructure and transportation portfolios. Recent acquisition activity is focused on battery cooling systems, thermal management components, heat pumps, fluid management, and integrated vehicle thermal systems. Transactions involving companies such as Hankook & Company Group, Hanon Systems, Mutares, and S.M.A. Metalltechnik indicate a focus on expanding thermal management portfolios, integrating battery cooling technologies, and strengthening capabilities for EV applications.
