Christopher Mayer, CEO of Longbridge Financial, has been named a 2026 HousingWire Vanguard Editor’s Choice Award winner, recognizing his leadership and impact across the housing finance industry.

Christopher Mayer, CEO of Longbridge Financial, has been named a 2026 HousingWire Vanguard Editor’s Choice Award winner, recognizing his leadership and impact across the housing finance industry.

Mayer was recognized for a career spanning housing economics, academia, public policy, and mortgage finance, and for translating that experience into innovation at Longbridge Financial. A former economist at the Federal Reserve and Professor Emeritus at Columbia Business School, Mayer has spent decades studying housing markets and mortgage finance, including providing testimony before Congress on issues affecting mortgage markets and homeownership.

“I’m grateful to HousingWire for this recognition, but the progress we’ve made at Longbridge is the result of a team that is willing to challenge conventional thinking and keep asking how we can better serve borrowers,” said Mayer. “There is still an enormous opportunity to improve the way our industry helps people access and use the wealth they have built in their homes. That requires innovation, but it also requires responsibility, good data, and a willingness to listen. I’m proud of what our team is building and excited about where we can take it next.”

As CEO of Longbridge, Mayer has applied expertise to one of the country’s growing financial challenges: helping older homeowners make better use of the wealth they have built in their homes. His leadership has helped shape Longbridge’s expansion beyond traditional reverse mortgages and toward a broader range of home equity solutions designed to give older homeowners more flexibility in or near retirement.

“Chris has always pushed us to think beyond what this industry looks like today and focus on what older homeowners will need tomorrow,” said Melissa Macerato, Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer at Longbridge Financial. “He brings the perspective of an economist, an academic, and a business leader to every decision, but what stands out most is his focus on the homeowner. He challenges us to innovate, use data, ask harder questions, and grow responsibly. Longbridge is a stronger company because of his leadership.”

Over the past year, Mayer has led Longbridge through the continued expansion of its home equity offerings, including the introduction of HELOC For Seniors®, a home equity line of credit designed specifically for homeowners age 62 and older, and the continued evolution of the company’s proprietary Platinum reverse mortgage suite. His approach extends beyond any individual product. Mayer has focused on how the reverse mortgage industry can responsibly evolve to meet the changing needs of older homeowners, championing new lending solutions that expand consumer choice while maintaining the safeguards, transparency, and responsible lending standards essential to the market.

“Chris has a singular ability to connect the economic questions facing older Americans with the practical work we do every single day,” said Bill Packer, Chief Operating Officer at Longbridge Financial. “He encourages us to challenge assumptions, listen carefully to our customers and clients, and make decisions grounded in data and the needs of the older Americans we serve. That approach has shaped our products, our technology, and our culture, and it continues to push Longbridge and the broader industry forward.”

Mayer’s influence extends beyond Longbridge. In 2026, he became the inaugural co-chair of the Mortgage Bankers Association’s Senior Mortgage Solutions Network, a first-of-its-kind forum dedicated to advancing education, collaboration, and innovation around mortgage solutions for older homeowners. He also serves on the National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association Board of Directors and Executive Committee, helping guide industry advocacy and advancement.

The 2026 Vanguard honor marks Mayer’s second time receiving the recognition, following his selection as a HousingWire Vanguard in 2022. He has also been named an Inman Best of Finance Award recipient for four consecutive years, further recognizing his continued leadership and influence across housing finance.

The HousingWire Vanguard Awards recognize C-level professionals and business leaders whose leadership is moving markets forward. Honorees lead businesses contributing to the growth of the housing economy across lending, servicing, investments, real estate, and other sectors, with each demonstrating a significant impact on the broader housing industry.
